In 1997, Michael de la Torre started working as a freelance make-up artist for Nebraska and Iowa film and television. Shortly there after, he had also become a member of the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Film Commission which in turn made it possible for him to accept work in the state of Texas as well. Prior to his move into the film and television industry, Michael had spent several years working as a scenic artist and carpenter building stage settings and props for live theatre production.
In the Spring of 2000, Michael was contracted as the Key Make-up Artist on a feature film shooting in Tampa, Fl. After the three month shooting schedule ended, Michael's plans of returning home to Omaha were slightly altered when he decided to move to Orlando. He wanted to take a chance on furthering his career as a make-up artist and become a union member of latse East Coast 798. |

Michael found work almost immediately on the Universal Studios back lot and over at the MGM Studio sound stages located on Disney property. Michael believed that Orlando, FL would be perfect because it provided him with the opportunity to accel down two different career paths. Working as a make-up artist and scenic artist required a careful eye and a steady hand at painting and sculpting, and Michael enjoyed both equally.
With the many different theming and scenic art shops located in the Orlando area, Michael soon realized the extreme demand for someone with his artistic and leadership capabilities. Freelancing as a make-up artist began to fall by the way-side while he spent the majority of his time painting and sculpting the architectural elements on various theme park and resort hotel projects. Michael cites two former employees of Walt Disney Imagineering and a freelance Disney artisan as the teachers who helped further develop him as an artist and shape his environmental sculpting technique. |
